Mother Goose goes to Gander

A while back I contacted Shell Canada headquarters in Montreal and got permission to spend a day, with the help of my daughter Jennifer, going through what was left of their archives from the 40s and 50s  to see what I could find about operations in Gander. I came across in particular the article below, from “Shell News” for December 1959, which talks about the lack of books in the library in the new school.  When the school opened, there were only about 100 books available for 1500 students.

When Shell’s Eastern Division Operations , Frank Butler, toured the new school, he saw immediately the lack of books.  When he got back to Montreal, he sent a circular to all the Division’s employees for book donations.  Due to the great efforts of Shell employees, 500 books were added to the library.
