I started out with
daily newspaper working as a freelance 'stringer' when our
daughters, Carolyn and Cheri, were little. Eventually went
to college and finished up my degree while continuing to
work for newspapers over the years. Bruce and I moved to U.S.
in 1965 after he left Bank of Montreal to pursue a degree
and go into teaching--Jr. high math and science. Now he's
retired and I'm still plugging away (really don't want to
retire).
My partner, Anna, and I started this paper,
Village Reporter, after reporting and editing our
competitor for a number of years. It has been an uphill
struggle, 'cause they have deep pockets, however we believe
we put out a better package, or so people tell us. We
cover three towns, Boxford, Topsfield, Middleton (strictly a
local package) with a town meeting form of government. So
we have the job of reporting on selectmen, school
committees, planning boards, conservation commissions and
the like on a biweekly basis; and hiring freelancers to
cover feature stories, columnists etc. It's a lot of fun and
we don't shy away from controversy--people like that
too. I'm a grandmother with two little guys, Andy, 9,
and Alex, 7, --my A-team. They live in New Jersey and I
don't see them as often as I would like!!!
