The Boston Bruins come to
Gander by Don Carter

Do you remember the opening of Gander Gardens located on the old
Canadian Side back in 1956? The pictures show some of the action on
that opening day. I will always remember the words of sports broadcaster
Aubrey Mac - "Remember if you can't take part in sports be a good one
anyway" . Later that same year the NHL Boston Bruins hockey team visited
Gander and played against the Gander All Stars. I was at the game as a
young 9-year- old and was able to get the autographs of all the players
on the Boston team. The Bruins had stars such as goaltender Terry
Sawchuck, Leo Labine, Vick Stasiuk and Doug Mohns to mention a few. As I
remember it, the first period ended with Boston ahead by the score of 21
to 1. The Gander All Star goal was scored by John Murphy. The second and
third periods were played with some of the Boston Burins wearing the
Gander jerseys and some of the Gander team wearing Boston jerseys. It
sure is a good memory of a special event.
